NYC SALT

NYC SALT
NYC SALT is a nonprofit photography program serving inner-city high school students in NYC that I started in 2005.

The mission of the program is to use photography to engage, inspire and empower inner-city youth through professional instruction in not only the creative and technical aspects of photography, but also the business. Photography is a fun and cool way of expressing yourself, but for a kid, it's even cooler when they can use their cameras to make $50 for a headshot.

I started NYC SALT because I wanted to give something back to my community, and I wanted to create a program where my peers in the industry could also give back within their skill set and talents. I continue to be amazed at the way the program has grown and the photographers, photo editors, manufacturers, and business people that have so generously given their time and money to help kids in our city become the best they can be.

Our program is a class once a week after school for three hours. We teach the students everything we know about the trade and art of photography, and we help them develop college lists, apply to internships and universities, take them on field trips, and give the occasional freelance job.

The best part of the program is the reward of seeing our kids' succeed and getting their phone calls from college to say, "guess what, I got straight "A's" this semester!" In our first graduating class in 2011, we had students collectively recieve over $200,000 in grants and scholarships. We currently have students at Syracuse University, Savannah College of Art and Design, School of Visual Arts in NYC, Fordham, the Technical Career Institute, and the University of Vermont. All of our students are the first in their families to go to college.
